Diplomacy is Not an Option is a real-time strategy game with base building, focused on fighting giant hordes of enemies. In a medieval fantasy setting, you defend your castle against waves of up to 25,000 units on procedurally generated maps. The key to survival is skillfully combining fortifications, armies, economics, engineering, and magic.
The game offers four game modes:
- story campaign,
- endless game mode,
- challenge mode,
- sandbox mode.
Additionally, the game features a map editor that allows you to create your own scenarios and challenges.
The plot is satirical in tone, with the king having brought the country to ruin and the peasant rebellion falling directly on your shoulders. You can crush them or join the rebellion, encountering the Sarranga tribe and hard rock-worshipping undead along the way. Regardless of your choices, the war will claim thousands of lives.
One of the game’s distinguishing features is its advanced physics model – every arrow, catapult stone, and flying enemy is physically simulated. This forces players to carefully design their walls, towers, lines of fire, and defensive zones. Civilian infrastructure is equally important: agriculture, housing, burial of the fallen, treatment of the sick, and prevention of epidemics.
The economy is based on the management of raw materials such as food, wood, stone, iron, and gold. Expansion without safeguards threatens disaster, and trade – including the use of airships – allows for rescue in times of crisis. This is complemented by powerful magic, including black magic, which allows the summoning of destructive spells and spirits.
The game emphasizes freedom of play style: you can rely on walls, mass infantry, aggressive economic development, or precise micromanaged defense. Everything leads to one conclusion, which is best reflected in the game’s title: diplomacy is not an option.
